Historical Society News – October 2015

2016 should prove to be an exciting year for Saddle Brook residents as we celebrate the 300th Anniversary of our township’s beginning and fascinating history. Known as Saddle River Township until its name was changed to Saddle Brook in 1955, it is first mentioned in the minutes of the Bergen County Justice of the Peace and Freeholders on March 20, 1716, in relation to the defraying of costs paid for the bounty of killing wolves. During its early years, boundaries and county lines were constantly shifting and the township at one time ran north to the New York state line. Over the years the township became smaller as the many boroughs that we know today seceded: Glen Rock and Lodi in 1894, Garfield in 1896, Elmwood Park in 1916 and 1917, and Fair Lawn in 1924.

Mayor Robert White has appointed Police Chief Robert Kugler as the chairperson for the 300th Anniversary Committee which will oversee celebration plans and activities. An initial meeting took place in September at Town Hall. About twenty enthusiastic townspeople signed on as members of the committee, and many exciting ideas were exchanged. Future meetings will be held to identify specific plans.
